Hosting FAQs

The most-asked questions about our hosting services and billing. Can’t find the answer? Check our Knowledge Base or simply Contact Us.

What is hosting and why do you need one?

Hosting refers to the service that allows individuals and organizations to post a website or web application onto the Internet. A hosting provider offers the technologies and services needed for the website to be viewed on the Internet. This involves storing your website files on servers, which are powerful computers that run continuously to ensure your site remains accessible around the clock.

What is Disk Space?

Disk space refers to the amount of storage allocated for your website's files, including HTML files, images, videos, databases, and emails. The term "unlimited" can be misleading, as it typically comes with certain conditions.

What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth measures the amount of data that can be transferred to and from your website during a given time period, usually measured in gigabytes (GB). Like disk space, the term "unlimited" often has its limitations.

Do Unlimited Disk Space and Bandwidth really exist?

When considering a hosting provider, many people are drawn to the allure of "unlimited" hosting plans. However, it's important to understand the potential pitfalls associated with these offerings. Unlimited hosting typically means that the provider does not set hard limits on storage or bandwidth. While this may sound appealing at first glance, it is often accompanied by several caveats.

  • Fair Use Policies: Most companies advertising unlimited resources implement strict fair use policies. This means if your site consumes too much bandwidth or storage, you could face throttling or even account suspension.
  • Performance Issues: Unlimited hosting can lead to overcrowded servers, which impacts speed and performance. Shared resources among numerous users can slow down your website's load times.
  • Hidden Costs: Some providers may lure you in with low initial prices only to introduce higher fees later for essential services or upgrades.
  • Lack of Support: Budget-friendly unlimited plans often come with subpar customer support, leaving you stranded during critical issues.
  • Scalability Challenges: As your business grows, an unlimited plan may not provide the necessary scalability options, forcing you to switch providers later.

While unlimited hosting may seem like an attractive option, it's essential to read the fine print and consider whether it truly meets your needs. Opting for a reputable hosting provider, like Galaxy Design, that offers transparent resources and reliable support might be a better choice for long-term success.

What is MySQL Database?

MySQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that uses Structured Query Language (SQL) for accessing and managing data. It is widely used in web applications, making it a crucial component for many hosting companies. MySQL is ideal for a variety of applications, including:

  • Websites and blogs
  • E-commerce platforms
  • Content management systems (CMS)
  • Data warehousing
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) systems
What is CPU and how many do you need?

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is essentially the brain of the server, carrying out instructions and processing data. Its performance directly affects your website's speed and responsiveness, especially under heavy traffic.

The specific CPU requirement can vary widely. For small websites and personal blogs, a single CPU core may suffice. However, medium-sized businesses might require 2-4 cores to manage their operations effectively. Large enterprises or high-traffic websites often benefit from dedicated servers with multiple CPU cores to ensure seamless performance under load.

What is RAM and how much do you need?

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is a type of computer memory that temporarily stores data that is actively being used or processed. RAM plays a crucial role in determining how efficiently your server operates and how quickly it can process information.

  • Basic Websites: For simple websites with low traffic, such as personal blogs or small business sites, 1-2 GB of RAM is generally sufficient.
  • Medium Traffic Sites: If your site has moderate traffic or runs more complex applications, 4-8 GB of RAM is recommended.
  • High-Traffic Websites: For larger websites, especially those that handle significant transactions or have high visitor volumes, 16 GB or more may be necessary.
What are entry processes (EP) and how many do you need?

Entry processes refer to the maximum number of simultaneous connections your hosting account can support. Each time a visitor accesses your website, an entry process is activated. This includes not only standard page views but also backend operations like database calls and API requests. As you can see entry processes play a significant role in determining how well your website handles traffic. If your site experiences high traffic or runs multiple applications simultaneously, having an adequate number of entry processes becomes essential to prevent slowdowns or crashes.

  • Small Personal Sites: Typically require 1-5 entry processes, as they generally have low traffic and minimal resource needs.
  • Medium Traffic Blogs: May need around 5-15 entry processes to handle increased user interactions and plugin usage.
  • E-commerce Websites: Should consider 15-30 entry processes, especially during peak shopping times, to accommodate multiple transactions and user sessions.
  • High-Traffic Sites: Popular sites with significant traffic might require 30+ entry processes to ensure seamless user experience and quick load times.
What are low, medium and high traffic websites?
  • Low traffic websites typically receive fewer than 2,000 visitors per month. These may include personal blogs, small business sites, or portfolios.
  • Medium traffic websites are those that attract between 2,000 to 20,000 visitors each month. This category includes small to medium-sized businesses, e-commerce sites, and community forums.
  • High traffic websites generally receive over 20,000 visitors per month and can go up to millions. Examples include large e-commerce platforms, news websites, and popular blogs.
Do I share resources with other customers?

Yes, your account is hosted on a shared hosting server but with a very low user contention. We provide our cPanel Hosting Service using the CloudLinux operating system, which provides a very high level of account security and isolation using technology called CageFS. Additionally, we utilise another CloudLinux technology called LVE on these servers, which limits the resources that any individual account can use on the server at one time, ensuring that the performance offered by the server remains predictable and stable.

What if you want to upgrade later?

If you decide you want to upgrade to a higher package or VPS - it's easy. Just contact our support team, and we will guide you through the entire process.

Do you need help with transferring your website to us?

We can help you migrate your websites from any cPanel based hosting platform. Simply contact us; then sit back and relax whilst we take care of the rest.

  • Migrations are limited to 25GB per account.
  • Migrate your website files, databases and email.
  • All data will be copied over as-is.
  • Move with minimal disruption to your service.
  • Our team verifies each migration as quickly as possible.
